Product of the month: January
This month neoFroxx focuses on EDTA for molecular biology.
Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid is a hexavalent ligand that acts as a complexing agent for numerous divalent and trivalent cations. In addition to the two free electron pairs of the nitrogen atoms, the four carboxy groups are also available for a complex compound, which enables the formation of particularly stable complexes (e.g. with Cu2+, Ni2+, Fe3+, Mg2, Zn2+ and Co2+).
EDTA is one of the most frequently used complexing agents and is used in numerous industrial areas as well as in chemical analysis and biochemistry.
Our EDTA for molecular biology is intended for applications involving DNA/RNA or enzymes. Here, EDTA is added to various buffers to bind free (heavy) metal ions. The background is either the protection of nucleic acids or proteins from degradation by DNases/metalloproteases, or an increase in enzyme activity through the interception of metallic impurities.
